• Tourette's syndrome - Treatment should start at 2 mg per day, gradually increased to a 10 mg maintenance dose. It can be increased to 20 mg if needed, though this is unusual.
• Irritability associated with autism - Treatment should start with 2 mg per day, which may be increased up to 10 to 15 mg per day.

The medication has a calming effect, stabilizing mood and promoting clear, focused thinking. Disruptive symptoms and behaviors are significantly reduced, if not eliminated altogether. It will take at least a week to see the full benefits of treatment if taking tablets.

Note that patients with depression, particularly if under age 25, may find depression symptoms worsen and suicidal thoughts may increase. This typically happens in the first few weeks of treatment if it happens at all; younger patients should be monitored closely at the start of treatment.
